V&A inspired, John Lewis designed

John Lewis has unveiled a new and exclusive series of decorative pieces for the home, inspired by the collections and interiors within the Victoria and Albert Museum. Designed by the in-house John Lewis team led by Philippa Prinsloo, the series captures the creative spirit of the V&A.

The series is comprised of 18 pieces across lighting, furniture, textiles and decorative accessories. The John Lewis design team worked with the Museum’s licensing team to draw inspiration for this unique capsule collection.

Highlights from the series include the Fitzhenry Collector’s Cabinet, inspired by 19th century art dealer and collector Joseph Henry Fitzhenry who presented his collections to the V&A. The back panel of the walnut display cabinet is crafted using modern routing and cutting techniques, and is an interpretation of cabinets on display within the V&A. Elsewhere the Jack Marquetry Side Table is a laser-cut occasional table that is named after George Washington Henry Jack, a British Arts and Crafts designer who revived marquetry techniques for furniture design in the 19th century.

Decorative lighting is also featured within the series - the Paxton Cloche Table Lamp is domed in shape taking inspiration from the visual details, form and materials of the original Crystal Palace, home to the Great Exhibition. The profits from the 1851 exhibition helped fund the creation of the V&A.

The Jones Wall Light is simple in design, but casts dramatic patterns of light onto the wall when switched on. The illuminated flower petal effect reflects the influence of Owen Jones, a champion of Islamic art. His work with the V&A, showcasing and celebrating Islamic artistic traditions, was hugely influential in popularising the style.

Further highlights include a tabletop collection featuring unique illustrations inspired by the V&A’s collection of Japanese art and design, the Kaiyo Wallpaper Panel, inspired by the rich examples of pattern on display throughout the Museum, and a series of cushions and rugs drawing inspiration from a wide range of decorative artefacts.

Philippa Prinsloo, home design manager at John Lewis says: “The original purpose of the V&A was to promote excellence in design and manufacturing, and we wanted to capture this idea to create this series for John Lewis. Each piece tells the unique story of a certain exhibit or architectural detail within the Museum, and we aim to tell these stories through the way we present this exciting series to our customers, from the way that products are presented in our shops through to the packaging of the products themselves. We believe that this is a series of products that you can’t help but fall in love with.”

The V&A inspired, John Lewis designed series will be available in John Lewis shops and from late August.
